Books & Media
These books and media are roughly in chronological order from the first ones I found and read to the most recent. I know that for blogs and most lists reverse chronological order is often used. My blog, for example, is reverse, most recent at the top. But in my Journey, when I was most desperate, the books God put before me are listed first to give someone else who doesn’t know where to start, a place to start.
For the most part I don’t endorse making “deals” with God. You know the kind, “If you get me out of this, God, I’ll be a good boy” (for about two minutes). But I’ll tell you about a deal I made with Him so you can know why some of these books are on this list. It’s an odd list. At least I think so. I told God that I would read whatever resources came my way if He would make sure they were taking me down the path HE wanted me to take. There are some books on this list that before I came back to Him I would never have read. Ever. NO WAY. And yet they came into my possession, some in very unusual ways, so I am keeping up my end of the deal. And He has broadened my hope. Broadened my understanding of Him. Deepened my Love for Him. Even placed me in a church where I would have been so uncomfortable before. Now look. Lynn and I are part of a ministry reaching out to men and women dealing with addiction and the incredible fallout. Like I said, I don’t endorse making deals with God but I made mine out of trust (a very difficult thing for me at the time) and said, “I’ll read it. You guide me.”
There are some absolutely stunning and incredible books and media in this list. If you’re not sure, don’t judge. They’re here because God put them in front of me. That’s a powerful recommendation. I pray you find help (and hope) here.
Note: This is not technical APA style, the style with which I’m most familiar. This is my format. It’s functional and still gives credit where credit is most definitely due.
The Holy Bible – GOD. Pick a version you like or use several. I compare because some versions are big on head stuff and textual accuracy and others are big on heart stuff and emotion of the text. You need both. I use the YouVersion app a lot. My five versions of choice on YouVersion, in order, are Tree of Life Version, Amplified Bible, New International Version, The Passion Translation and Young’s Literal Translation.

I was a music major in College. Music is a big deal to me. I believe music is one of God’s best gifts to us. When I was first found out and I was on my own trying to sort out what life I was going to have left, contemporary Christian music helped soften my heart to God. I actually listened to the words and they were me but with hope. It is my opinion that God has placed in this time some of the most gifted lyricists of all time. Casting Crowns. Chris Tomlin. Matthew West. Big Daddy Weave. Zach Williams. Francesca Battistelli. He has also gifted them with the courage to write what is in their hearts, what they’ve survived, caused them to be vulnerable and admit their struggles and put it all out there in their music. To this day, Francesca’s Holy Spirit brings me to tears because it was one dark and lonely morning I heard it and truly opened my heart to the Holy Spirit. I’d given my life to Christ and was baptized when I was 15 but I had never given much credence to the Holy Spirit, let alone give Him any power. I opened my heart that day and let Him in; begged Him to come in. I allowed Him to search and cleanse every idol I’d hidden away in recesses of my heart I didn’t even know I had.
Immediately following my tearful submission to Holy Spirit’s Power, Flawless by MercyMe came on that same radio station. I used to scoff at these kinds of “coincidences” but no more. God continually moves in ways I’ve never thought possible – often using heartfelt songs by vulnerable and transparent artists who love Him. I am forever grateful for all who had anything to do with putting these songs on the air that morning.
May you be touched, softened and moved as you listen.
